- Reduced glutathione (GSH)- Tripeptide Antioxidant Research Compound-
- is the dominant intracellular thiol antioxidant in mammalian tissue repair and the central redox buffer maintaining cellular thiol- disulfide homeostasis. As a research compound, it has been characterized in thousands of peer reviewed studies on oxidative-stress biology, xenobiotic conjunction, and dermatological pigmentation pathways. The lyophilized reduced form preserves the active free thiol against air oxidation during storage and reconstitution.
Mechanism of Action:
- GSH provides reducing equivalents to glutathione peroxidase for the detoxification of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, conjugates electrophilic xenobiotics through glutathione-S-transferase, and regenerates oxidized ascorbate and tocopherol through the glutathione-redox cycle. In dermatological research, GSH is hypothesized to inhibit tyrosinase activity and shift melanogenesis from eumelanin toward pheomelanin synthesis, which underlies its extensive investigation in melanogenesis-pathway research using keratinocyte and melanocyte models.
Research Applications:
- Oxidative-stress biology and redox homeostasis studies
- Xenobiotic conjugation and Phase II metabolism research
- Tyrosinase inhibition and melanogenesis investigations
- Hepatic glutathione depletion models (acetaminophen, etc.)
- Mitochondrial thiol-redox status research
